Ashley founded Smash Dance Academy (previously knows as Orem Dance Theatre) in 2006. The purpose of this dance studio has been to provide an environment where aspiring dancers can recreationally learn dance technique. Ashley has successfully cultivated a place where students can passionately engage and build confidence in dance but can also have the flexibility to engage in other activities of life. Ashley started dancing in Las Vegas, Nevada at the age of 5. She was trained in ballet and tap through the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) and the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD). She completed both programs with High Honours and in 2005 received teacher training certificates for both programs. Ashley also trained in jazz, theatre and modern styles during her childhood years. Ashley continued training in all of these styles during her college years at Brigham Young University. While there, she performed with their seasonal tap performing team and joined a Hip Hop group that performed around the state. Ashley has taught ballet, jazz, theatre and hip hop classes over the past decade. She has continued her teaching education the last 10 years through a variety of teacher programs around the country. She has trained with many well know choreographers such as Dorit Koppel, Finis Jhung, Tyce Diorio, Mia Michaels, and Robert Hoffman.

Rachel received her Bachelors of Arts in Dance from Brigham Young University and was awarded the Distinguished Graduating Senior award, as well as the Outstanding Female Performer award. As a freshman, she was fortunate to be chosen as a member of The Dancers’ Company and perform in Caroline Prohosky’s film project, Onward Alone, produced by the LDS Motion Picture Studio. Rachel performed with and choreographed for both dancEnsemble and Contemporary Dance Theatre, enjoyed opportunities to travel and perform throughout Texas, New Mexico, Montana and Wyoming, and has worked with dance professionals such as Eric Handman, Leah Cox, Carl Flink, Carley Conder, Bebe Miller, and Andrew Madsen. Upon graduation, Rachel was excited to be offered a position as adjunct faculty at BYU and has taught beginning and intermediate level contemporary technique classes there for three semesters. Rachel is currently an administrator and performer with Wasatch Contemporary Dance Company where she continues to develop herself as a dancer, choreographer, and teacher.
Jasmine trained in Kansas City, KS for the majority of her life at DanceWorks Conservatory. She has trained in Ballet for 14+ years, along with many years in Pointe, Jazz and Contemporary. In 2003 she attended Brigham Young University’s Ballet dance camp. Jasmine has also taken various classes over the years in California, Utah, and Europe. At the age of 12 she received JR. Outstanding Dancer Runner-up award at NYCDA. Jasmine has been on numerous dance companies since the age of 11, including BYU’s dancEnsemble in Winter 2009. She has had many performance opportunities over the years, with lead roles and companies. In 2007 Jasmine went to Europe with Signature Dance Company to perform with the Young Tanszommer, Stars of Tomorrow tour. Jasmine began assisting dance classes at a very young age. She started teaching classes on her own at the age of 15 and has been teaching ever since. She has taught classes of all ages, and has produced choreography for groups of all sizes as well as solos.

Sydnee gained her love for dance at the age of 8 where she started training at Utah Academy Dance Studios. During that time, she was traveling all over the state competing and attending conventions with classes taught from Mia Michaels, Travis Wall, and Stephen “Twitch” Boss. While learning various types of dance such as jazz, hip hop, and tap at UADS, she was also training with Connie Burton at the semi-professional ballet studio, Rocky Mountain Ballet. With RMB she performed in many shows including Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and solo variations of Paquita. In high school Sydnee was the dance president of her dance company and choreographed many pieces while doing so. In 2012 during her senior year in high school, she had the privilege to intern at SMASH Dance Academy and eventually earned a teaching position in 2013, she has loved every second since. Sydnee is currently studying Elementary Education at Utah Valley University in Orem, UT where she was born and raised. She is happy, humbled and lives by the quote, “We dance for laughter, tears, madness, fears, hopes, and screams. We are the dancers; we create the dreams.” –Einstein
Chantelle LaFontaine fell in love with dance at a young age, she danced at various studios but began training seriously at The Dance Club in Orem Utah, where she received training by professionals from around the world. She traveled, competed and performed around the states on their Company for 7 years. She then danced and choreographed with Timpview High Schools dance team and is now continuing her training at Brigham Young University. She is currently on DancEnsemble at BYU while taking lots of dance classes. Chantelle is a Dance Education Major and will then continue on to a Masters degree in Dance Therapy. Dance and teaching brings Chantelle the most joy and she loves every second of it!
Addison started studying dance at the age of three at The Dance Club in Orem, UT, joining their Company teams at the age of nine. For thirteen years she traveled around the world with her team, competing at national competitions and conventions. She was on the Timpanogos Dance Team in high school, and is now currently studying English Literature and Film at Brigham Young University. Dance will always be a very influential and important aspect of her life, and she cherishes the fact that she gets to do what she loves everyday and help her students foster a love for dance as well. Addison has loved working at SMASH these past few years and looks forward to the years ahead!
Mom & Me, Pre Ballet
Becca graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in April 2010 and was awarded “Distinguished Graduating Senior.” Becca trained and performed with Academy of Ballet in high school and later taught ballet and jazz at the studio throughout college. She was an Orem’s Junior Miss representative in 2005 and was awarded a talent scholarship in dance. She traveled with a group to Russia to perform in Moscow and participated in a dance study abroad in various parts of China. At BYU, she performed and choreographed for dancEnsemble, a student-led contemporary dance team. She also toured and visited local elementary schools with the dance company Kinnect to teach math, science, and language arts through creative dance. After college, Becca taught an introduction to contemporary dance class as an adjunct faculty member at BYU and choreographed musicals for a local junior high school. While living in Mesa, Arizona, she taught a variety of ages and dance styles at Resonate Dance. She loves the magic of teaching young children, and she and her husband have one son and one daughter. She is grateful to be a teacher and choreographer at Smash Dance Academy!
Tatum has been dancing for 10 years and has trained at Smash Dance Academy since we opened in 2006. She performed all three years on Orem High School’s dance company. She is trained in ballet, point, jazz, contemporary and hip-hop and is one of our favorite Smash alums. Dance has become a way for her to express her emotions and to stay active while doing something that she loves. Tatum is a marketing student at Brigham Young University. She looks forward to being on the teaching side of Smash this year and working to help students improve their skills and to enjoy dance.
Shantel began dancing at the age of ten and trained at three different studios in Riverton, Utah where she’s from. She started with ballet and jazz and later picked up pointe, hip hop, modern and dabbled a little bit in tap and folk. She was on Riverton High’s Dance Company her senior year and then attended BYU where she graduated with a degree in Exercise and Wellness with a minor in Contemporary Dance in August 2011. While at BYU she joined the Hip Hop Club and remained a member for six years and choreographed three pieces for them. She also danced twice in BYU’s Best Dance Crew, two senior projects, and a Faculty Works concert. She also had the opportunity to go to China for a Dance Study Abroad program in 2010. Her independent work consists of choreographing for local elementary schools, choreographer and dancer for Artist Interrupted, and a jazz dancer in “Footloose” through the Orem Scera Theater. Before coming to Smash she taught ballet, jazz, and hip hop for four years at Legacy Dance Studio in Orem. Along with teaching dance she works full time as a wellness coach for Unicity International and is also a personal trainer.
